Touch-Up Time

As I have mentioned here, I have really tried to step up my make-up game this past year.  While I have built up a pretty good collection for my standard morning routine at home, I didn't have much to offer in the "touch-up" department.  Since my job often entails post-work events, I realized it was pretty necessary that I have small makeup bag on hand at all times.  After many trips to Sephora and some testing of co-workers' and friends products', I have found that the pictured items work best for me.  As you will see in the description below, none of these products require a brush, which means I can easily apply them no matter where I am (i.e. standing on the subway)!

1.  Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter - works great to show off cheek bones or highlight around the brow bone.  Also has a sponge on the end for blending!
2.  Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick - While I don't actually wear foundation, this stick is perfect for freshening up under eye makeup and covering any blemishes
3. Nars The Multiple (in Maui) - Cream blush in stick form that I like to dot on apples of my cheeks.  Can also be used as an eyeshadow depending on the shade.
4.  Sephora Ultra Shine Lip Gloss (in Rose Petal) - gives a hint of color and tons of gloss for any shade of lips
5.  CoverGirl Last Blast Length Mascara - Doesn't flake off and is light enough to apply multiple times a day

Bold Boots

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and has recovered from their food comas!  I had a whirlwind of a trip, traveling all over my hometown state, Pennsylvania.  While the traffic was a bit crazy, it was totally worth it to see my amazing family and friends.

I actually had another post slated for today, but the gorgeous crisp weather in NYC inspired me otherwise.  Feeling invigorated to get back into the swing of things this week, I decided to dig to the back of my closet and pull out my burgundy boots.  These boots make more of a statement than your typical riding boot so I like to wear them whenever I am feeling extra bold.   Since the boots speak for themselves, I typically pair them with a neutral sweater and jeans (which is exactly what I did today).  With some leaves still lingering on our street, I decided to snap a pic to share.  What are some bold fall pieces in your closet this year?  xx

Maxi-mizing the Cold Weather

A few months ago a friend asked me to do a post on wearing maxi skirts and dresses into the cold season.  Since I happen to be slightly obsessed with all things maxi, I was really excited to share my ideas.  As with any summer piece you are bringing into fall, the key is to change the textures you are pairing it with.  For example, in the summer months, you may wear your flowy maxi with a sheer sleeveless blouse and a pair of wedge sandals.  As the temperatures drop, you will want to opt for thicker fabrics on top such as wool, fur, and leather.  As for footwear, you can wear anything from leather oxfords to suede booties or my favorite, moto boots.  And as the weather gets really cold, be sure to throw on a pair of thick tights or wool socks underneath for added warmth.  See below for outfit descriptions!  xx
  1. Standard Black Maxi:  Since this is the comfiest maxi of all, I like to pair this with a soft flannel shirt and a worn-in leather jacket.  I added a statement necklace to glam up the look a bit.
  2. Pleated Maxi: This skirt is one of my more dressy maxis, so I paired it with a sleek leopard sweater and a simple gold necklace.  This look works for the office and happy hour.
  3. Printed Maxi Dress: While it's too cold to wear this dress as is, you can easily warm it up by throwing a cozy sweater overtop and adding a fur vest (or scarf).  Since I was going for a more boho look, I finished the look with a vintage pendant necklace.
  4. Sheer Maxi: The sheerness on the bottom means you should definitely over-compensate for warmth on top.  I paired this skirt with a plain long sleeve crew neck and a wool cocoon sweater.    By adding the glitzy collar necklace, this outfit is perfect for a day of brunching and shopping!

Better than Pinterest?

The title of this post is a bit shocking, I know.  As a huge pinterest fan, I can't believe the thought even crossed my mind.  However, since working at PureWow, I was introduced to an amazing online shopping site called Hukkster, which our editors wrote an article about here.   The site is similar to Pinterest in that you add a "hukk it" button to your bookmark bar.  Then, anytime you are online shopping (i.e. everyday) but not quite ready to make a full-price purchase, you can "hukk" the item, which saves it your Hukkster page.  As soon as that item goes on sale, you are notified immediately via e-mail of the new reduced price.  When you are "hukking" you can choose specific sizes and colors you are looking for, which ensures your size is available when you get the notification.  Also like Pinterest, you do have to request an invite from the site, which can take a few weeks to go through.  However, I PROMISE you it is totally worth the wait.  Enjoy!  xx

Classic Flannel

Flannel Shirt: J.Crew Glam Outfit: Asos Collar, Republic Peplum Skirt, Tights,  3.1 Philip Lim Shoes
Relaxed Outfit: Alice + Olivia Fur Vest, Citizen's of Humanity Jeans, Tribal Bangles, Zara Booties

As many of you kindly reminded me (seriously, thank you!), ES was in need of a new post.  While I have not been able to update as often as I would like, I promise you my time has been spent doing "market research" (aka: shopping) for upcoming posts.   This past Sunday I stopped at Urban Outfitters, where I picked up this comfy piece (in navy/red).  I have always had an on-going obsession with flannel because you can never go wrong with its' classic plaid prints and its' cozy soft feel.  With staple brands like J.Crew, BDG, and Gap offering us new soft options every year, it's proof that flannel really is a fall wardrobe staple.  I understand some may associate flannel with hiking or sitting by a campfire, but I like to think of flannel as another option from your LBD.  Whether you are headed to brunch with friends or out for date night, you can dress it up as much or as little as you want.  I put together two outfit ideas for how I plan to wear my new purchase.  How do you usually wear your flannel?  xx

It's a Boot Thing

Clockwise from top left: Coated Jeggings, Lace Skirt, Dress, Suede Boots, Lace Up Boots, Chelsea Boot

I have been on a major black boot kick this fall.  I realized over the years I have really built up my brown boot collection (because there is in fact a difference between camel lace ups and taupe booties and yes you need both).  However, besides a pair of over the knee riding boots, I was totally lacking in the black boot department.  This fall I have made a conscious effort to only allow myself to consider buying black boots.  Since I have limited closet space, I also had to make sure and narrow my choices.  Above I have listed out my top choices and paired each one with an oxblood colored piece (since I am obsessed with that color right now!).  Which ones are your favorite? xx

Sleeve Season

As someone who needs a sweater in the middle of July, wearing a short sleeved or strapless dress for a fall occasion never works out well for me.  Since I have two fall weddings this year (one of which has an outdoor ceremony), I am only considering long sleeve dresses.  The beauty of this style is that it is very elegant on its own since the lines tend to be minimal and clean.  This means only one or two accessories are necessary (including a clutch) to make it wedding appropriate.  I have put together 4 of my favorite looks for this season.  Which one do you like best?  xx

An ES Moment

Last week ended on a high note for me.  My favorite blogger (and one of my inspirations for starting ES), Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere was in town for NY Fashion Week.  To wrap up her week, she hosted her first book signing at Bloomingdales.  I was determined to go to the event since I already had the book (thanks Britty!) and I of course wanted to see just how lovely Emily was in person.  I arrived at Bloomingdales later than anticipated and was initially told that the line was already too long and they were no longer letting people in.  Since I had already made the trek uptown, I wasn't going to give up that easily.  The event was hosted by Estee Lauder so I decided to take hang around and take advantage of the free makeovers (and cupcakes).  With a fresh face of makeup on, I wanted to take one more shot at sweet talking my way in (I guess that's why I am in sales!).  My plan worked and I was quietly let in at the end of the line, where I met two other girls who also had the same idea.  Seeing the amazing turn out and the entire Estee Lauder section featuring "Emily's Picks" reminded me of how successful Emily has become.  It is so inspiring to watch other bloggers turn into business moguls and really make a name for themselves.  Meeting the face behind my favorite blog and having a reminder every time I look at her book was truly a NY moment for me.  Who inspires you?  xx

Inspirations Collide

Piperlime store opening + Rachel Zoe appearance = ES heaven.  I have been ordering from (and loving) Piperlime since the site launched in 2006, so I was thrilled to find out their first brick and mortar store was opening in Soho this year.  Piperlime has not only led me to some of the best pieces in my closet, but it also introduced me to Rachel Zoe.  She was brought on board as their first celebrity style consultant and blew up the site with her stylish eye (I still get excited when something I like is a Rachel Zoe "pick").  When I found out that Piperlime and Rachel Zoe were both on the itinerary at this year's Fashion Night Out, it was the only place I needed to be.  My girlfriends and I were lucky enough to be standing near the front of the line when Rachel showed up and one friend snapped the picture above.  Needless to say, Rachel Zoe and Piperlime exceeded all my expectations for this year's FNO.  Did you do anything special in your city?  xx

Fall Finds

Clockwise Bottom Right: Topshop Army Jacket, Alexander McQueen Scarf, Band Collar Army Jacket, Baukjen Cardigan, Bottega Veneta Bag, Theory Maxi Shirt Dress, Pyrus Maxi Dress, Gap Cardigan, Stuart Weitzman Boots

Tonight is Fashion's Night Out here in NYC, which means it is the official kick off to New York Fashion Week!  While the designers will all be showcasing their Spring collections, us non-models/designers/Vogue editors will be gearing up for a change in wardrobe for fall.  As I mentioned in my last post, I am very welcoming of the change in seasons this year and have put together a collage of my personal fall must haves.  Some I have already purchased (i.e. the cardigans pictured above), while others are still sitting on my wish list.  I wanted to keep it as simple as possible so I limited my choices to 6 key items below(in no particular order):

1. Leopard scarf (because leopard is actually a neutral in my book)
2. Army Jacket
3. Comfy cardigan with contrasting elbow patches
4. Short boots with an edge (i.e. gold tips on the front AND back)
5. Fall print maxi dresses with and without sleeves
6. Maroon accesory

What is on your fall finds list?  xx

Fall Breeze

While the temperatures in New York are still in the summer mid-80s, the breeze has suddenly started to feel like fall.  After a fun brunch with girlfriends on Sunday, I decided to extend the afternoon with shopping.  My intention was to scour the end of season sales, but I quickly realized that everything O found was brightly colored and felt summery.  While it was tempting to make the purchases and save them for next year, I decided I was ready for fall attire.  I quickly changed my shopping gears, and went on the hunt for the perfect ankle boot.  Since I believe that a gal can never have too many brown boots, I decided on a pair of camel-colored moto boots.  They are incredibly comfortable and will look great with leggings, girly dresses, and of course skinnies.  What was your first fall wardrobe purchase this year? xx

Sunday Recovery

To anyone who has been visiting the ES page recently, you have probably noticed I haven't updated in quite some time.  The past few weeks have been beyond crazy (in a good way) because I have accepted a new job at a fantastic digital startup company called PureWow.  PureWow produces a daily e-mail targeted towards women interested in anything from fashion to culture to recipes.  My role will be on the sales side, helping to expand digital advertisers for the site.  While it was of course very bittersweet to end my five year chapter with News America, I am really looking forward to this new adventure. In my time off in between jobs, I was able to take two vacations (more to come on those) and have a couple of days to get my life back in order.  Due to the craziness of interviewing, I didn't have much time to work on my growing list of DIY projects.  I decided to take advantage of my lazy Sunday yesterday and had some fun with mason jars.  Using just twine and the jar, I created a rustic looking piece by simply wrapping the twine around the top of the jar.  This took no more than 5 minutes to complete and fits perfectly on our distressed end table.  For now it contains matches from some of our favorite restaurants, but I plan to re-create this look to hold candles, travel trinkets, etc.  What are some creative things you have done with mason jars? xx

Breezy Beachwear

Each year, when the calendar turns to August, I am always reminded how fast the summer flew by.   This summer has been particularly crazy and almost felt non-existent.  However, unlike years past, I have a trip planned at the end of beach season, which means there is still a chance for summer 2012.  My boyfriend and I decided to book a last minute trip to Belize, where we will spend 5 days on the beautiful island of Ambergris Caye.  While I am certainly ready for zip lining through the jungles and snorkeling in the reefs, I am even more ready to relax on the shores of the Caribbean.  Since we have two weeks before we leave, here are a few items that I would love to pack in my suitcase. Did you travel anywhere exciting this summer?  xx

Fringe Fest

Next weekend I will be headed to Catalpa NYC Music Festival, which is held on Randall's Island right outside the city.   I am looking forward to seeing some of the headliners such as The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, and Girl Talk, as well as discover the underground bands I am not as familiar with.  Not surprisingly, I am just as excited to see all of the fashion throughout the weekend.  Since this is NYC's mini version of Coachella, I imagine everyone will be dressed to jam.  While I have not decided on what my weekend outfits will consist of, I created the above collage to give myself some inspiration.  Let's face it, isn't part of the fun in going to a music festival being able to wear a bralet and a fringe waistcoat for 3 days straight?  I think so...xx

{Words}

While I can't say I am a person that reads quotes daily, I sometimes wish I was.  This summer has been insane for more reasons than one and I often find myself needing outlets for motivation and inspiration.  As silly as this may sound, I have recently been finding myself on Pinterest reading through quotes and inspirational messages posted by some of my favorite bloggers and icons.  Since this has now become a routine part of my life, I wanted to share a few of my favorites that have been helping me get through the past few weeks.  What are some of your favorite inspirational quotes?  xx

Home Times

Outfit:  Blouse: Target, Necklace: Vintage, Jeans: J.Crew, Shoes: Dolce Vita, Bracelets: Indego Africa

Being home for the 4th of July has been a blast. Wednesday was spent picnicking with family and watching fireworks with our neighbor friends from the comfort of their driveway. It has been so nice to be able to escape the NYC bustle (and heat) and relax poolside or lakeside every day. While our trip home is still not over, I wanted to share a few photos of what I've been enjoying the past few days.  xx

Indego Africa

Wrapped Cowhorn Bangles - Purchase Here

Last week a friend and I attended a fundraising event to support Indego Africa.  Indego Africa is a non-profit social enterprise that is dedicated to helping the women-owned businesses in Rwanda gain access to for-profit companies in order to sell their hand-crafted merchandise.  These partner companies include J.Crew, Madewell, Anthropologie, Dannijo and many other major retailers.  Additionally, Indego Africa raises money from fundraising efforts, merchandise sales, and donations to provide their 400+ women artisans in Rwanda with the opportunity for further training and education in subjects such as management, literacy, technology, and health.  After attending the event, I felt very passionate about getting involved with the organization and will now be a member of the New York Regional Board.  I am thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful organization and hope to bring value and ideas to the committee.  If you are interested in learning more about Indego Africa, you can check out their website here.  You can also purchase the artists' amazing merchandise at their online store here.  I have included some pictures from last week's event, which raised $2,450 for Indego Africa!  xx

With the 95+ degree temperatures in NYC this week, summer has officially arrived.  Like most other people in the city, my weekends are filled with travel to try and escape the heat!  Since I have been living out of a suitcase, I wanted to share my staple travel items that always make the packing cut, no matter what the occasion.  Whether I am traveling by car, train, or plane, I always wear my black maxi skirt, chambray shirt, and scarf combo.  Since I like to pack as light as possible (I have been known to pack 8 days worth of outfits into one duffel), I always choose to wear shoes that are comfy but are also stylish enough to be worn outside of the train terminal.  I also make sure to pack a carry on (or purse) that can serve as my beach bag.  Within this bag, I keep my favorite magazine, SPF gloss, and a punchy pink nail polish. Thanks to my mom's advice growing up, I always throw in a bathing suit just in case travel gets delayed and I need to get to the beach stat!  What are some of your summer travel essentials?  xx

Little Black Classic

Aaaaand we are back!  Sorry for the lack of posting but I promise I have been putting together some great things to share.  Last week, I went to Karl Lagerfeld's "Little Black Jacket" exhibit and was completely blown away.  The space consisted of 113 photos of various artists, models, actors, muses and even a nun wearing Chanel's very famous Little Black Jacket.  All of the photographs were taken by Karl Lagerfeld (naturally) and each one portrayed the jacket in a different fashion.  Due to minimal PR, I was actually told about the exhibit from a friend who works within the industry.  The lack of publicity did however make the space very easy to navigate through.  As you can tell from this post, there were also no limitations on photographs, which I certainly took advantage of.  Unfortunately the exhibit has already moved onto the next city (Taipei) and will end its city tour in Paris in the fall.  It is here that the book this event is based on will be released to the public for sale.  For more details on this fantastic work of art, you can visit the website here.  Enjoy!

Subway Inspired

I could not help but admire a fellow subway rider's shoes today.  And while some may find this a little creepy, I adored them so much that I decided to take a picture of them to share with all of you.  As you can see, the shoes were mesh oxfords, which I thought were a perfect alternative for everyday sandals in the summer.  I of course have now been scouring the internet trying to find a replica of these bad boys, but sadly have not had any success so far.  This is another one of the moments where I find myself wishing I had just asked this random stranger where she purchased her shoes.  What are the chances I will ever see her again?  You never know in this city...xx

Unexpected Find

As I mentioned in this post, I am very into dainty jewelry these days.  I am constantly on the search for delicate rings, bangles and necklaces.  At a wedding a few months ago, I came across this lovely menu ring and decided that it was pretty enough to wear as a jewelry ring.  While it of course is not real gold (or let alone metal for that matter) it works great because I can adjust it for whatever finger I want to wear it on.  Since it has become an everyday staple in my wardrobe, I thought I would share this unexpected find with everyone else.  Do you have any unexpected finds in your closet?  xx

Summer Funk

Piperlime is tpically my go-to shoe shop since they always seem to have amazing sales on a unique selection of shoes you can't always find in the store.  Since I wanted to bring some funk to my current shoe collection, I decided to purchase a pair of new flat sandals (with a pop of color), a pair of dressy chunky heels, and a neutral summer wedge (with some tribal pattern detailing).  While it may seem a bit excessive to buy 3 new pairs of summer shoes, I can assure you my old sandals had seen better days.  xx
