Metal Fingertips

Nail Rings
Clockwise from top left:  Asos Knuckle Nail Ring; GoJane Embellished Nail Ring; Club Manhattan Nail Ring; Bijules Short Nail Ring; Alynne Lavigne Horseshoe Nail Ring

I am really feeling nail rings these days.  Not only do they remind me of my beloved Gaga, but they truly are the new "statement nail".  What I love most about these little accessories is that they can be super understated (such as the two on the far left) or a bit more extreme (i.e. one in middle top row).  Once I saw them on my favorite blogger's site, Cupcakes and Cashmere, I knew I had to have one.  Since the one she featured was a too pricey for my liking ($170), I decided to do a little research and find some more affordable options.  The last one is literally a ring made from a nail, which I thought was equally as cool.  What are your thoughts on this statement nail option?

Is That My Wine?

A few weeks ago, I hosted some girlfriends for an arts and crafts night.  My inspiration was getting a kick start on the many DIY project ideas I had building up on my pin boards.  When I first joined Pinterest this summer, I fell in love with all of the different chalkboard ideas.  I saw chalkboard mirrors, chalkboard frames, and full on chalkboard glasses.  My favorite idea was chalkboard painted wine stems, which came from the blog, Just Short of Crazy.  I loved the idea of personalizing your guest's glass without having to use any sort of charm or accessory.

The actual project is very simple, which is why it was the perfect one to cross off my list first.  Besides the wine glasses, you will need to pick up either chalkboard paint or chalkboard spray, newspaper or cardboard pieces, parchment paper, and some sort of masking or electrical tape.  I ended up purchasing both chalkboard paint options but since the spray paint fumes might not smell so great in my little NY apartment, I decided to go with the paint version for this project.  Below I have listed the step by step process on how I created this easy craft.  While I love these for myself, I think they are great gift options too!

Step 1:  Wrap stems with tape

Step 2:  Dip bottoms of glass into chalkboard paint, letting as much of the excess paint drip off as possible.
Then place on parchment paper with bottoms down, moving the glass around frequently for the first few minutes

Step 3:  After an hour or so, flip the glasses over to ensure the bottom is completely dry

Step 4:  Ready to use!  Write your friends' names on the glasses to make sure there are no vino mix ups

Friday Smiles

Happy Friday everyone!  I know the Sh*t "XYZ" Says has been a bit overdone but I couldn't help but giggle when I saw one for "Sh*t Fashion Girls Say".  Of course a lot of it is over the top but some things are pretty on point (aka I do own a turban and will be sporting one this weekend).  Thought I would share this with the rest of you to give you another reason to smile on this warm and rainy Friday.

Have a great weekend!

Retro Cell Phone Handset

WOW.  I cannot believe what a hiatus I have taken from updating ES.  The past two weeks have been insane.  Between my on-going apartment search, half-marathon training, and a little flu in between I couldn't seem to find the time to do what I enjoy most.  The good news is my time away from ES has given me new motivation to create a long list of post ideas.  One of which is very applicable to my life right now: finding the perfect phone case.  I recently caught up with the rest of society and purchased an iPhone.  As with any of my accessories, I am now on the hunt to find the perfect cover to protect this smart little gem.  While there are literally millions of options to choose from, I have narrowed my search down to the below.  I added in the gold retro phone above because I am sort of obsessed.  What do you think?

Chorizo Clam Chowder

While the weather in NYC this weekend was not your average January temperatures (it was 57 degrees on Saturday), my boyfriend and I were still in the mood to cook a hearty winter soup.  This past fall some friends invited us to participate in a "Chowder Off", where each team made their own chowder recipe.  While our Cheeseburger Chowder was quite tasty, my favorite chowder from the day was a Chorizo Seafood Chowder.  The lovely chefs (who happened to me my roommates and one of their boyfriends) used Emeril's Chowder of Love Recipe (found here) as their base and modified a few ingredients.  This included substituting chorizo for the bacon and adding in fresh shrimp.  We decided to recreate this recipe on our own and went to Essex Street Market to get the freshest ingredients.  While we excluded the shrimp in our version, we did find a great spicy chorizo that really gave the chowder some kick.  Additionally, we cut almost the entire recipe in half (excluding the veggies) and it still made about 5 hearty servings.

Gone Skiing

Black Sweater; White Sweater:  H and M; Grey Sweater: J.Crew

While I haven't actually hit the slopes since the 8th grade, my growing collection of ski patterned sweaters would tell you otherwise.   In evaluating this observation, I realized that every winter season I tend to go on a sweater buying binge.  Last year's theme was cozy sweater jackets, the year before was sleek sweater dresses, and this year has been established as ski sweaters.  I am certainly not complaining (I scored the above black piece for $10 at H and M), but I am willing to admit my habitual shopping patterns.  To justify this season's obsession, each of these sweaters serves a slightly different purpose.  The black sweater is a cropped soft piece that will be perfect for loungey weekends, whereas the white version is a sweater dress that could be worn with my favorite skinnies or leggings.  The grey sweater is much thinner than the other two and therefore will be perfect for laying under warm winter wear.   Do you have any shopping patterns to share?

Shimmering Reminders

I have never been much of a New Year's resolutions kind of gal.  However, I have a lot to be excited for in 2012 (running my first half marathon, moving in with my boyfriend, turning the big 27) and therefore felt like this was the perfect year to jump on the resolution bandwagon.  As a way to make myself accountable for my goals, I was inspired by my favorite blogger, Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere, to write them down and frame them.  I wanted to choose an extra pretty frame so that I could keep the list out in a place I will see every day (I chose the most frequented dresser surface in my room).  While some of my resolutions might be easier to check off the list than others, I am going to do my best to keep up with with all of them.  What are some of your resolutions this year?
