This past weekend I visited friends from high school and college in both DC and Baltimore.  I had been to DC several times before and always have a great time there.  However, I had never been to Baltimore and was pleasantly surprised to discover what an awesome city it is!  It is definitely a much more casual atmosphere than DC and offers a lot of great shopping, restaurants and bars (not too mention the famous Inner Harbor).  One of my favorite parts about the trip (besides seeing my friends of course) was being introduced to a Baltimore based boutique called South Moon Under.  The store has about 8 or so locations in the area and has a perfect selection of well known brands (i.e. Rebecca Minkoff, House of Harlow, Aryn K, Free People, etc.).  While I am sure I could find similar stores in New York, there was something so quaint and unassuming about South Moon Under that I loved.  Since I couldn't actually buy anything at the store (less than 2 weeks to go!), I decided to do a post on some of the items I loved.  Thank goodness they have a website...Enjoy!  xx

Coconut - Crusted Chicken

Sorry for the lack of recent posts; this past week seemed to fly right by me.  To make up for my absence, I wanted to share with you a delicious recipe I recently made.  The dish is called Coconut Chicken, which I found on my trust BHG recipe app.  You can find the full listing of ingredients here.  As you will see it is a simple recipe that I like to think is pretty healthy too.  The recipe has two separate parts.  The 1st part is to baste and coat the chicken with the coconut mixture (see below pics).  The second part is to make the mango salsa.  I will admit that due to time constraints we cheated and bought Whole Foods version of mango salsa, but as you will see on the recipe, the salsa is super easy to make.  Since this dish doesn't call for any sort of carb, we paired it with a kale salad.  Enjoy! xx

Fresh Flowers

This past weekend was a whirlwind of events. And while it seemed to fly by, I made sure to take the time to relax a little on Sunday.  I had stopped at a local market to pick up a few ingredients for dinner and saw the most gorgeous hydrangeas on display.  Realizing that these are probably my favorite flower (I have never been good at remembering flower names), I had to pick up a few.  After arranging the vase to put in the living room, I quickly remembered how wonderful it is to have fresh flowers in the apartment.  It brightens the whole room and makes lounging an even lovelier experience.  While I don't know that I could keep hydrangeas in the apartment year round (they are on the pricey end and tend to wilt pretty quickly), I am going to make an effort to keep fresh flowers in the apartment more frequently.  xx

Closet Shopping

As I mentioned in this post, I have banned myself from shopping until Easter (22 days and counting!).  While this has been lovely for my wallet, it has also opened my eyes to so many pieces that were already hanging in my closet.  I have rediscovered everything from classic sheer shirts to broken in jeans and my favorite, long lost jewels.  I have owned these rings (pictured above) since middle school and essentially wore them until college.  I had stopped wearing them because I went through a phase of sporting large cocktail rings, but I've realized how much I missed the look of simple thin rings.  While I would love to add to my collection of dainty rings, I am actually very content with the rings I already owned.  Each ring has it's own special story (the dolphin ring represents my love of the beach and dolphins, the amethyst ring is both mine and my grandma's birthstone and was a gift from her, and the monogrammed "c" ring was a special gift from my parents).  Do you ever re-discover special pieces in your closet?  xx

Chicken and Gorgonzola Cheese

Full recipe can be found here
As I mentioned here, one of my New Year's resolutions was to cook more often.  While living in NYC makes it incredibly hard not to go out for every meal, now that we have a decent sized kitchen to work in, I am really trying to keep somewhat true to this resolution.  Since I haven't done a food post in quite some time, I wanted to share a recent meal I made that is 1. EASY and 2. DELICIOUS.  I found the recipe on the Better Homes and Gardens recipe app (which is amazing, I highly recommend you download).  The recipe calls for 7 to 8 very simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your kitchen.  While the sauce is fairly similar to an Alfredo, it is much more flavorful with the addition of the Gorgonzola cheese.  A few modifications I made were cutting the Gorgonzola portion in half, adding an additional 3/4 cup of mushrooms (I used baby portabella), and substituting half and half cream instead of heavy whipping cream.  I found the sauce to still be incredibly rich with these changes but it is all dependent on your preference.  Below are a few pics of the meal below.  xx

Flea Finds

The Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene.  The location changes to an outdoor space in Williamsburg come April

This past weekend was a perfect mix of plans each night with the days wide open.  We took full advantage of this by checking out the Brooklyn Flea Market on Saturday afternoon.  I was overwhelmed with the fantastic selection ranging from vintage caged light bulbs to floor to ceiling tin framed mirrors.  It was a blessing in disguise that we had to take a subway back to the city because I literally could have purchased everything in sight.  Since my purse (and my boyfriend) could only carry so much, we found some smaller items for the apartment (plus the best pickles and bloody mary mix you will ever have).  One of my favorite finds is a gold vintage mirror, which got me one step closer to finishing my "wall of mirrors" project.  If you ever have the time to check out the Brooklyn Flea, I highly recommend! xx

I don't think I have mentioned yet on ES that for the 40 days of Lent, I chose to give up shopping (clothing, accessories and shoes).  While it has been a little over 2 weeks and I am going strong, the amount of fashion magazines, e-mails, and people I see daily really has made this tough for me.  As a way to satisfy my shopping craving, I decided to make a "spring wish list collage" to capture all of the things I would be buying right now.  Lucky for me, I had already picked up a very similar gold accordion skirt (pictured above) before Lent began, so I can thankfully check that one off the list.  As you can tell, I am loving colorful pieces mixed in with neutrals for spring.  I used the gold skirt as inspiration for this collage, picking a wide variety of pieces that could easily be paired with it.  Which option is your favorite? xx

Easy Living

The perfect summary of all the wonderful things New Orleans has to offer

As I mentioned in my last post, myself and 14 friends went to New Orleans for a long weekend.  While the official reason for our visit was to participate in the Rock and Roll Half Marathon Race, we certainly wanted to experience the southern hospitality that New Orleans has to offer.  The race was a success for everyone and we were not shy on celebrating afterwards.  While we were only there for 3 short days, we were able to hit all of the hot spots on our list.  This included a night out on Bourbon street (and drinking Hurricanes at Pat O'Briens), walking Royal street, roaming the French Quarter/French Market, shopping on Magazine street, eating as much jambalaya, gumbo and beignets as possible and of course finding some great local jazz bars.  The trip was truly incredible and made me realize how much I enjoy the southern paced lifestyle.  I snapped quite a few pics throughout my time in New Orleans but here are a few of my favorites.  xx

Favorite Space

Before I head off to New Orleans for the half marathon race, I wanted to share one more post update on the things that I am currently loving in our new apartment.  For my birthday, my boyfriend bought me a beautiful new dress form that is almost too pretty to cover up with clothes.  Since our new apartment has a good sized living room (for NYC standards), I wanted to incorporate the dress form into our decor.  We were lucky enough to find a place with a lot of character, so the brick wall backdrop has been the perfect contrast for the mannequin display.  The dress form is placed next to one of our windows, which happens to also have a small view of the Freedom Tower that is being built downtown.  It is truly my favorite spot in the entire apartment.  Below are a few pictures I wanted to share.  xx
